PORTER University or college of California- Irvine We all examine the literature addressing the empiricalrelationships, if any, between organizationstructureand performance, and draw distinctions between " hard" and " soft" performancecriteria, subgroup versus organizationunitsof analysis, and " structuring" versus " structural" dimensionsof structure. The concluding recommendationsfor futureresearch can be found not as the inevitableprescriptionbutratherin the interestof correcting markeddeficiencies and imbalances. Business structure can be considered the anatomy of the corporation, providing a groundwork within that this organization capabilities. Organization framework is believed to affect the patterns of organization members. While Hall  noted, this belief is founded on a simple remark. Buildings include halls, stairways, entries, leaves, walls, and roofs. The precise structure of the building is a major determinant of the actions of the people within this. Similarly, habit in businesses is influenced by the organising structure. The influence of this structure, whilst not as apparent as those of a building, is thought to be pervasive. Business structure continues to be subject to the latest journal assessment [Cummings & Berger, 1976; Ford & Slocum, 1977; James & Williams, 1976; Ouchi & Harris, 1974; Scott, 1975] and is the topic of several latest books [Burack & Neghandhi, 1977; Galbraith, 1977; Khandwalla, 1977; Kilman, Pondy, & Slevin, 1976; MacKenzie, 1978; Melcher, 1976; Pfeffer, 1978]. Yet , the association between structural variables and gratification - possibly the single most important dependent adjustable in the two public and sector -- has been largely ignored. James and Roberts, for instance, evaluated the conceptual relationships among organization framework and person attitudes and behavior. Scott examined the result of technology 49
